Oppose proposed restriction on rail transit - LWVCA Press Release- August 11, 2009

The League of Women Voters of the Cincinnati Area announces its opposition to the proposed City of Cincinnati Charter Amendment which would restrict passenger rail transit. The amendment, if passed, would prevent the City from spending "any monies for right-of-way acquisition or construction of improvements for passenger rail transportation" without first obtaining voter approval. Requiring Cincinnati voters' approval before spending money on passenger rail transit would result in excessive delays in the development and implementation of an adequate transportation system for our city and limit transportation options.

In addition, the League opposes the proposed Charter Amendment because the Charter should provide for the flexible operation of government and should not restrict City Council's legislative authority on specific issues. "The proposed amendment is too specific for a Charter and too far reaching in its consequences," says Alice Schneider, president, League of Women Voters.

Ohio League of Women Voters announces positions on state ballot issues:

Issue 1: Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Authorize the State to Issue Bonds to Provide Compensation to Veterans of the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq Conflicts - NEUTRAL

Issue 2: Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Create the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board - OPPOSE

Issue 3: Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Authorize a Casino in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo, Ohio - OPPOSE

See the Ohio League website for the analysis behind each position.

Sign The Greater Cincinnati Commitment to disavow all forms of racism and prejudice not only on a personal level, but on a community level: to join with others in taking steps aimed at dismantling the residue of past racism, prejudice and stereotypes of all forms that persist in the Cincinnati region to this day, and to treat all people with respect..

COMMIT TO IT - Sign the Pledge!

I believe the full greatness of our city, our region and our nation will only be achieved when every individual has a full and unrestricted opportunity to learn, grow and contribute to the community with all the potential of their innate personal gifts.

I believe that in this new millennium we can and we must move forward to remove the vestiges of racism and other forms of discrimination from our city, our country and our individual lives.

In this spirit, I make this commitment:

* I will use my individual and our collective strength - intellectually, politically, economically, spiritually, and morally - to eliminate discriminatory behaviors, policies and practices from my community.

* I will openly and intentionally seek to open doors that will ensure everyone the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

* I will embrace diversity and seek equity for all members of the human family.
